Many oil painters have finagled their way into galleries with hackneyed works, but a few have the talent to breathe new life within the constraint of the art canvas. Inka Essenhigh's portfolio thrives in the progression of oil painting. Contorted figures, pastel colors, sumptuous contours -- Essenhigh is today's Salvador Dali. Her narrative work renews the surrealist passion for the psychedelic. I find elements of Anime in her emphasis on fine lines and form repetition. She plays with perspective while her painting titles tease onlookers with meaning. Humorous depictions of party girls and airport activities mute any pretentiousness. Using traffic cones, gas stations, subways, and mini blinds, Essenhigh harnesses a sensibility through knotty figures and flexible objects found in modern day environments. In three words: elegant elastic objects. At the young age of 37, her style is untouchable and refreshingly original.
